How a Card Trick Led Me to My Wife

Twelve years ago, I got booked to perform at a surprise 18th birthday party near Kalamazoo, Michigan. Just another casual show during my high school magician years. What I didn’t know was that one of the guests at that party would end up becoming my wife.
The party was held at a house in Schoolcraft. I remember crouching in a side closet, waiting for my cue. From behind the door, I heard a whisper — someone joking, maybe the surprise was an exotic dancer. Much to their surprise (and probably relief), I stepped out and slowly unbuttoned my jacket... only to reveal a bowling pin I’d magically produced out of nowhere. The show had officially begun.

That night, I did a little stand-up set in the living room, then followed it with a close-up magic session around the dining room table. The group of girls had just come back from dinner and were lounging, laughing, and definitely skeptical about having a magician crash their party. But they got into it. The energy flipped. Laughter, surprise, connection. It turned into one of those really fun, really magic nights.
One of the girls that night was Ashley — the birthday girl. I remember her smile. I remember her laugh. I remember her watching with her friends, light in her eyes. During the close-up set, I handed her a card to sign. And because I was 18 and thought I was smoother than I actually was, I asked her to write her name and number on it. It was something I used to do in those days. I always guessed girls wrote fake numbers, if anything. But she didn’t. She handed the card back.

In those days, I still had a rabbit in the show, so Hocus even made an appearance to round out the evening.

A couple days later, I messaged her on Facebook. Said thanks for the show, happy birthday, asked if she could send me the photos her mom had taken. Then I dropped the line: "Hey, we should hang out sometime. What’s your number?"
Her reply? "You already have it."
I was driving a minivan at the time, and I remember running out to the backseat where I kept all my decks of cards — dozens of them, all marked up with Sharpie. I flipped through stacks of signed cards from shows, and there it was. Her five of diamonds. Name and number. Still have it to this day. It’s framed now.
That night wasn’t just a party gig. It was the start of the most unexpected, most meaningful journey of my life. Magic has taken me around the world. It’s introduced me to incredible people. But that trick? That show? That girl?
That was the best reveal of all.
