Why I Stick Around After the Show

The curtain might drop, but the show isn’t over. Some of the most meaningful moments happen after the final trick, when the lights come up and people start making their way out. That’s why I stick around.

I’ve had guests walk up and tell me, “I haven’t laughed that hard since my husband passed.” Or, “I’ve been going through a rough time, and this was the first thing that made me forget for a while.” Those moments are powerful. They’re real. And they remind me that what I do matters.
I never want the audience to feel like they’re just watching a routine. I want it to feel personal. Human. I want them to feel like they were part of something — not just in their seats, but in the experience. Meeting people after the show helps seal that connection. It puts a face to the name. It lets me thank them, and it lets them share what landed.

I’ve had people tell me things I never expected — that their mom used to assist a stage magician, that they once dreamed of performing, or that a specific routine hit way closer to home than I would’ve guessed. Those stories shape how I see the work. And they shape the next show too.

I also love hearing people’s wild guesses about how the magic worked. Some are hilarious. Some are bizarrely close. And some just make me smile. That feedback, those reactions, even the out-there theories — they all help me refine what I do.This time also ties into the five emotions I want people to feel at my show: joy, connection, amazement, inspiration, and gratitude. And post-show conversations often bring all of them together in one honest, unscripted moment.
I don’t always get the chance to hang out. Sometimes there’s another event or a tight schedule. But if I can, I do. Always. I never force it. I just stay open to whoever wants to say hello.
The truth is, I walk away from those moments feeling recharged. Grateful. Energized. It reminds me that this is the best job in the world. And if someone takes the time to come talk to me after a show, that means I did something right.
